Meet our Management

David Watt Mr. David Watt founded D. A. Watt Consulting Group Ltd. in 1983 and has focused on building an organization of professional service minded engineers and surveyors specializing in civil, transportation engineering and legal survey services. He is responsible to ensure that D. A. Watt Consulting remains financially stable and is staffed with qualified and experienced personnel dedicated to understanding and fulfilling the engineering requirements of the projects undertaken by the firm.
Tom Medlicott Mr. Tom Medlicott is Vice-President of Legal Survey/Geomatics of D.A. Watt Consulting. Tom is one of the founding partners in D.A. Watt Consulting formed in 1983.  He is responsible for the overall supervision of the survey practice ensuring quality workmanship and efficiency time management of office and field technical staff.  Mr. Medlicott has thirty two years experience as an Alberta Land Surveyor managing a broad range of survey projects.Before his time at D.A. Watt Consulting, Tom was the Manager of Legal Surveys for Entek Engineering Limited from 1978 to 1983.
Grant McDonald Mr. Grant McDonald is Vice President of the Engineering division at D.A. Watt.  In addition to nearly 30 years of experience with consulting firms, Mr. McDonald spent a number of years working with private developers, primarily in the Calgary and Red Deer markets.  As well as managing numerous residential and industrial projects, he helped establish the UDI chapter in Red Deer and served as its’ first president.  Mr. McDonald’s land development background includes high level project feasibility analyses, project cost and quality control, subdivision plan and servicing design reviews, scheduling, contract administration and project management as well as land use, cost sharing and Development Agreement negotiations.   Mr. McDonald has been with D.A. Watt Consulting for over 15 years and currently serves on the company’s Board of Directors.  His land development experience and expertise affords D.A. Watt’s clients with a very senior level of project oversight and review.
Bruce Nelligan Mr. Bruce Nelligan is the Manager of Transportation at D.A. Watt Consulting and has over 18 years of experience in transportation engineering. His broad experience has been gained through employment as a consultant in Calgary and Vancouver, with municipal governments in Calgary and North Vancouver, and with Transport Canada.Since joining DAW in 2006, Bruce has been involved in hundreds of transportation planning projects. The majority of these projects have been development related involving site planning, transportation impact assessments (TIA’s), parking studies and multi-modal reviews. He has also led several major functional planning and road safety projects for municipalities in Southern Alberta.

Through his employment with Transport Canada and Hamilton Associates in Vancouver, Bruce gained significant experience in road safety engineering. With Transport Canada, Bruce was a Principal Project Investigator conducting collision reconstruction studies to document the performance of motor vehicle safety standards in the field. The particular focus of these investigations was related to commercial vehicle safety issues and air bag deployments.

While working for Hamilton Associates in Vancouver, Bruce was involved in hundreds of road safety studies throughout North America. The majority of the safety studies involved in-service safety reviews of intersections and corridors that had poor safety performance records. The objective of the studies was to identify specific improvements that could be made to reduce the frequency or severity of collisions. In addition to road safety studies, he also gained experience in traffic impact assessments, commercial vehicle studies and traffic engineering studies.

Nick Finn Mr. Nick Finn is Vice President of D.A. Watt Consulting’s (DAW) Transportation Department (formerly operating as Finn Transportation Consultants). Prior to joining DAW in 1994, he was responsible for a national transportation consultant’s activities in the Western Prairie Provinces.Since 1981, Mr. Nick Finn has both directed and carried out numerous transportation planning, parking and traffic engineering assignments for private and government-sector clients, as well as institutions and community associations. Mr. Nick Finn is an accomplished expert witness and has appeared frequently before town and city councils, planning committees and development appeal/variance boards.

Mr. Nick Finn provides services to his clients in the areas of municipal transportation planning and engineering, Transportation Demand Management, planning for sustainable and active modes, and parking. He specializes in strategic, policy and decision-making advice, and also provides peer-review services to the public and private sectors.

Mike Szarmes Mr. Mike Szarmes has over 20 years’ experience in the Geomatics field (GPS, Photogrammetry, GIS, land surveying) including extensive experience in Geospatial Information Management with MicroStation, ArcGIS and Oracle technologies. Significant projects include the development of the internationally-recognized and award-winning Base Mapping Management system at The City of Calgary.

Currently Mike manages the Geomatics Division within D.A. Watt Consulting. The Geomatics Division offers two key survey services: legal surveys and construction surveys. The Legal Survey Section works closely with Architects, Developers, Engineers and Contractors to achieve the planned development and site construction of commercial, industrial and residential land. The Construction Survey Section is involved with all aspects of the construction process for municipal, engineering, transportation and construction applications both internal and external clients companies providing on-site survey services for layouts, utilities, volumes calculations, alignments, highways, site improvements, buildings, piles, etc.

Mike has been articling since August of November 2006 in order to fulfil the requirements to become a Professional Land Surveyor in Alberta.
