The Bridges
When Calgary’s old General Hospital Site became available for re-development, the vision was to transform the 14+ block inner-city area (now called “The Bridges”) into a medium to high density residential node with supporting commercial and live-work developments. One major design challenge was to properly integrate the site into the surrounding Bridgeland-Riverside community while at the same time provide for improved overall access to the adjacent Bow River pathway system and the Bridgeland LRT station. D.A. Watt Consulting led the Transportation Planning focus of the study, which covered:
-
Extension of the Bridgeland-Riverside ‘gridiron’ street system into The Bridges;
-
A pedestrian-oriented street system, with ‘built-in’ traffic calming/management measures;
-
Transit-oriented development features and connections;
-
Special cross-sections for commercial streets;
-
The integration of parks within the pedestrian movement system;
-
Energy/environmental efficiencies which are part of the new development.
